It's the early hours of the morning in Newcastle City Centre and two reckless drivers are using the city streets as their own personal racetrack. As PC Brian Camsell tries to catch up with them, one car crashes. As Brian reads the riot act to the bashful boy racer he gets more than he bargained for. Another car hurtles past and despite the heavy police presence mounts the kerb and bursts a tyre. But this driver isn't stopping. As Brian races to catch him up it soon becomes clear what this dangerous driver has to hide.

In North Tyneside, PC Jan Simlesa does a double take with a suspected drug driver – he's arrested the familiar felon before. The suspect greets Jan like an old friend and despite a strong smell of booze is more than happy to be breathalysed. But it's the drugs test which brings him despair and leaves Jan teaching him a lesson.

On patrol in Sunderland, PCs Will Hunter and Mary-Anne Hutchison are comparing their policing styles, when Mary-Anne's copper's nose kicks in at the sight of a Ford Fiesta seemingly spooked by their cop car. As the Fiesta disappears down a back alley, Will and Mary-Anne stay on its tail. They stop the car and discover a learner driver who soon regrets letting their passenger come along for the ride.

Jamie celebrates the bounty of the spring garden and kitchen by picking some asparagus spears and cooking them wrapped in smoky bacon, served with sustainably sourced red mullet, scallops, squid and sea bass. Back in the garden, Jamie plants some tomato plants and demonstrates how to naturally deter pests with some companion planting. Jamie cooks up a spring greens ravioli, uses some spring onions in his version of an aromatic spicy green chicken curry and shows how to grow some unusual crops out of shop-bought vegetables. Finally, he gives purple sprouting broccoli an Italian-inspired makeover on a pizza with Cumberland sausage and a quick and easy tomato sauce.

The first group of eight head into battle and are immediately hit with an Invention Test. The larder has been stocked with some of the finest foods, so the only limitation will be the contestants' imaginations. The hopefuls need to step up when it matters and serve up John and Gregg a dish worthy of Knockout Week, as at the end, three of them will be emptying their lockers and heading for the exit.

The five lucky cooks who make it through will be rewarded with a shift in their first professional kitchen. There's no better place to start than in fine-dining bistro Nessa in London's glittering West End, where Michelin-trained executive chef Tom Cenci delivers a stunning menu packed with both originality and twists on the classics. This is a real chance for our amateurs to roll their sleeves up, sample life in the industry and deliver some top-notch cooking.

No more amateurs will leave the competition, but John and Gregg will be in the dining room scrutinising every plate that leaves the pass. With the MasterChef trophy in sight, nobody will want to leave a bad impression.

In a typical month, Cleveland Police can respond to over one thousand mental health related calls. It puts a massive strain on the officers in Middlesbrough Police Station.

On a Saturday night shift, PCs Jordan Vasey and James Boyd Bell are called to a suspected domestic incident but upon arrival the suspect is struggling to breathe and in need of medical help having taken cocaine. After checks by paramedics, the suspect is arrested and taken to custody.

At Middlesbrough Station, PCs Will Douglas and Katie Welford prepare to go on patrol. A call comes in about a domestic between a mother and daughter that has resulted in a garden gate being set alight. At the scene it soon becomes apparent that it is more of a mental health issue and the suspect is arrested and taken to custody where she can be checked and given support. In Custody Detention, Officer Gary arranges help for the suspect.

Outside custody a police van arrives with an agitated man who has been arrested on suspicion of assault. He resists coming out of the van and threatens to kick police. It takes seven officers to get him into custody where he claims to have an injured shoulder and demands to go to hospital. He is taken to be checked out but refuses to be seen and threatens to kill officers. It takes two police vans and yet more officers to get him back to custody.

In town a man is self-harming in the street. PCs Jonny Whitwell and Rosie Stonehouse attend but struggle to get through to the appropriate mental health teams. They face a long wait for help and with urgent calls stacking up in Force Control they are under pressure. An exasperated Jonny comments "Every job we go to usually has some sort of mental health issue attributed to them but we're not really the right people to do anything for them."

This year, police forces in England and Wales plan to ease the number of mental health callouts they respond to.
