A for Andromeda was a British science fiction set in nine years in the future: 1970. An advanced civilization has sent out the blueprints for a supercomputer through radio waves. The message is detected by a newly built radio telescope, and decoded. The blueprints are followed and the computer is built by scientist John Fleming (Peter Halliday) in Scotland. Professor Madeleine Dawnay (Mary Morris) is brought into the project when the advanced computer starts asking and answering questions about biology and chemistry.

Julie Christie enters the show as the character Andromeda as a biological entity (a woman that looks like a research assistant) created by the computer.

Most of the series no longer exists, being purged by the BBC in the 70s. The short-lived series was followed in 1962 by a sequel titled The Andromeda Breakthrough. The series also inspired a book based on the series, A for Andromeda by Fred Hoyle and John Elliot.
