Tetsuwan Atomu was the original, Japanese animated title for this show, which translates to Mighty Atom, or Atom Boy, which was first shown in Japan from 1964-1966. The title was dubbed from Tetsuwan Atomu to Astro Boy in America. It was the first Japanese animated show that later became known as an "anime." In 1952, Osamu Tezuka (sometimes referred to as the "God of Manga") started creating the Astro Boy series as a manga (Japanese comic-book). After the show's big success, the show was remade in the 80's as Shin Tetsuwan Atomu. In the U.S. it was remade in 2004. Astro Boy became so popular at one time, it was basically Japan's version of Mickey Mouse.

The show was a fiction cartoon that took place in the future, where robots lived along with humans. Astro Boy is centered around a robot-boy called Astro Boy, who was created by Dr. Tenma. Dr. Tenma did this in hopes of reviving his son Tobio, who happened to die in a car-accident.
