Carrie & Barry

Barry is a west London black-cab driver on the verge of a mid-life crisis. Carrie, his second wife, is a beautician, a woman far less stressed than her husband and who curtails his wilder excesses with a calm, laid-back attitude. Barry's disastrous first marriage produced a daughter, Sinead. Barry's cab is also driven by Kirk, a man as simple as Barry is complicated; they meet in the local pub - where Sinead is a barmaid - to discuss work and the minutiae of everyday life. Carrie confides in her workmate Michelle, who holds her peculiar, sometimes harsh, views on life.

Carrie And Barry reunited writer Simon Nye with his Men Behaving Badly star Neil Morrissey in another production exploring the inability of men to grow up. This time at least Barry was making an effort to behave responsibly, though thwarted by a need to hang on to his youth. Kirk was the bad influence, oblivious to Barry's dilemmas and quick to offer naff advice, and Sinead was on hand to remind Barry that he had responsibilities - no matter how slight. Carrie seemed to rise above it all, not really engaging with Barry or his problems but happy to share her life with a nice-enough guy.
