A new documentary will tell the story of Éamon de Valera's wilderness years from 1924 to 1926, and of the strong women who supported him – but would ultimately be betrayed.The programme, titled De Valera san Fhásach, will show the political leader being imprisoned, in poor mental health and stripped of his political power. It will also depict the radical, revolutionary women activists who stood by him during this difficult time.

S1E1 - Episode 1
Part one of two. Documentary about American-born Irish statesman and political leader Éamon de Valera, a leader in the 1916 Easter Rising. In 1924, De Valera was stripped of power and in poor mental health in prison. There was a cohort of radical women involved in the 1916 Rising and the War of Independence who supported him. Then the Treaty happened. As suddenly as he had gained power, de Valera was locked out of it. Opposing the Treaty gave these women common ground with De Valera, but who would end up the losers in this political game?

The women who supported him found themselves in an Ireland, far removed from the vision of equality as laid out in the 1916 proclamation.
