Tension during the Cold War. The Dutch student Dorien Vreelandt meets , the young Czech grandmaster Zdenek during a chess tournament. They fall in love. Through her he finds that his freedom is limited. He's under investigation by the Czech security service, because he is suspected of Western sympathies. By the Dutch authorities, he is suspected of spying for the communists. With Dorien he develops a plan to flee to the West.
