Axie Muldoon is one of the wealthiest women of 1800s. She was an abortionist who practiced medicine in New York City. She was born in Painswick, Gloucestershire, England in the United Kingdom, married at the age of 16 and her and her husband moved the the United States 3 years later. Her husband Henry Summer died of yellow fever shortly after moving to New York City. She became a seamstress at first and in 1836 she re-married Charles Lohman who was a Russian-German immigrant. Madame Restell as she was known became interested in medicine where she created birth control products. In the 1840s abortion was outlawed so she and her husband developed a very prosperous illegal abortion business.
