Marienhof is a German soap opera, set in a fictional area in Cologne. The show began in 1992 airing two times a week - Tuesdays and Thursdays. When Das Erste started it's very own daily soap Verbotene Liebe on January 2, 1995 Marienhof became on itself, airing now from Monday to Friday.
In the beginning, the focus of the show is centered around Inge Busch and her family. With the time more characters became very important, but Marienhof was always a show about family and difficult relationships. One of the most dramatic storylines in the history is until today the tragic death of Marco Busch.
In the 90s, the show was shown in various countries over the world; making 1995 to 1999 to the most successful time of the soap opera.
However the decline would come only years after. Fans argue that the show lost it's identity in it's last four to six years; blaming it on mis-producing.
In 2011, the soap opera was canceled after more than 18 years on the air. The show never recovered from it's "dark years"; continuing to fall in the ratings. The last episode was seen by only a little bit over a million viewers.
In it's best years the show had over three million viewers.
