A beautiful potmaker, named Nisa, who lives next to the sea finds a boy washed up on the shore in a small rowboat. He tells her that he was travelling on a ship with his mother. Believing the ship to have sunk and his mother dead, Nisa takes him in. Meanwhile the boy's mother wanders the town looking for him. An unscrupulous bully locks her up and makes her work like a slave. She doesn't remember that her son's father is a wealthy Duke, who is also searching for his son, who he only recently became aware of.
