Mobotropolis was once a thriving city on the Planet Mobius until the evil Dr. Robotnik took it over and renamed it Robotropolis. He soon began suppressing everything, including the playing of music, and forces all the inhabitants to pay tribute on a regular basis. There is a glimmer of hope, or more like, three. Queen Aleena, the true ruler of Mobotropolis, birthed three hedgehogs: Sonia, Manic, and most importantly, Sonic. All three children were separated by Queen Aleena at birth to fulfill the prophecy as told by the Oracle of Delphius, that someday she will be reunited with her children, form a Council of Four, and overthrow Dr. Robotnik. The children later reunited, and continued to work hard as Freedom Fighters against Robotnik and tirelessly search for their mother, the true ruler of the throne.

Sonic Underground was produced for syndication in the 1990's, Jaleel White (the voice of Sonic) and Ben Hurst (the head writer of the famous "Sonic Satam") were brought back to serve as talent on the production. White would voice all three Hedgehogs, whilst Hurst would supervise the writing, something he would later admit on interviews to be a nightmare and near impossibility. Sixty-Five episodes were produced, but only fourty were aired.

The series is heavily detested by Segasonic and SATAM Sonic fans alike, blasted for having little to do with the concept and distancing itself further from the concept. It is noticeable however, for first featuring Knuckles The Echidna in a US cartoon, and boasted a shocking guest star cameo from Sean Connery.
