Sex. Drugs. Stolen Money and Martinis. Family can really test your faith...
The Book of Daniel stars Aidan Quinn as the Reverend Daniel Webster, an Episcopalian priest who can see and talk to Jesus Christ (Garret Dillahunt), and happens to be the center of his religious community, yet still has one of the most dysfunctional families on the planet. Daniel also has a nagging addiction to prescription painkillers, which he at various times tries to quit, but none of his attempts have been successful thus far.
His wife, Judith (Susanna Thompson), keeps Daniel grounded, and she is one of his few sources of comfort and support. His oldest son, Peter (Christian Campbell), is gay, and in his own words, "Although he's not completely in the closet, he doesn't want to march in any parades, either". Peter also struggles with the loss of his twin brother to leukemia. Adam (Ivan Shaw) is Daniel's 16-year old adopted Chinese son, who loves to flaunt his sense of humor, and apparently hooks-up with a different girl every week. Grace (Alison Pill) is quite the crafty one, who not only deals marujuana, but also is quite the talented manga (Japanese comics) artist.
Daniel's readings are often viewed as controversial to the church hierarchy, and such, he usually retains an unstable relationship with them. The church is led by Bishop Beatrice Congreve (Ellen Burstyn) and Roger Paxton (Dylan Baker). Although Daniel's family may be quite the unstable one, at the end of the day, each one of them is there to help guide each other through what, at times, can be quite the chaotic life.
