The Good Life was an immensely popular British comedy of the 1970s. Tom and Barbara Good decide to abandon the rat race and live off their own resources, in their case a large house in posh Surbiton, where they plough up the garden and introduce a goat called Geraldine, a couple of pigs called Pinky and Perky, and various hens ruled over by a rooster nicknamed Lenin for his autocratic manner.

Living next door to the Goods are Margo and Jerry Leadbetter whose lifestyle is a complete contrast to that of Tom and Barbara Good. Jerry is an ambitious businessman who quite cheerfully admits that he does quite a bit of crawling in order to get on. His wife Margo is socially ambitious with interests in the local pony club and other community affairs, and who quite ruthlessly takes over the village musical society while its incumbent is away on holidays. Margo has her own set of rigorous standards which she will abandon for nobody, and is a vigorous social climber.

Nevertheless, despite their differences or perhaps because of them, the Goods and the Leadbetters are the best of friends, but they do have the occasional disagreement which only makes their friendship that much stronger.
