After the success of The World at War, the Soviet Union produced The Unknown War in cooperation with the United Kingdom. The reason for this was that the Soviet government felt that the previous series did not pay enough attention to the Soviet struggles in WWII.
The series was withdrawn from television for a while after the Soviet invasion to Afghanistan, and returned only after the tension was gone.
