While this stage started off on relatively flat terrain it certainly didn't stay that way, with three ascents and one descent, before it climaxed with one long, final ascent to Peñas Blancas.

The penultimate day of the Tour was scheduled to be a punishing one as the peloton faced an arduous mountain stage, which included a final climb up the Collado del Alguacil that featured an 8.3km ascent at an inclination of 9.8 per cent.
