This series tells a story of Britain spanning a period of seismic social change from the 1840s to the present day, through the prism of a single-terraced house in Liverpool. Presenter David Olusoga delves into 180 years of history, searching through city archives, scouring records and tracking down living descendants to tell the untold stories of the people who lived there, and reveal a unique insight into the making of modern Britain.
The house's first residents are an 18th-century church minister who helps French prisoners escape from Edinburgh Castle, a post office worker turned spy and a world-famous sculptor.
In the Victorian era, the residents of the house on Calton Hill include a maker of expensive shoes whose customers won't pay, a world-famous bagpipe maker and a notorious brothel keeper.
At the start of the 20th century, the new residents of Calton Hill find themselves wrapped up in bigamy and brutality.
In WWII, one resident is injured in a German minefield. Edinburgh's slum clearance threatens the house's existence. And David reveals the house's incredible history to its current owners.
