John Hughes joined MI5 during the war on terror and was at the forefront of averting the biggest terrorist plots on UK soil. Now in his mid 40s and married with two children he's struggling to adapt to the new MI5, where threats to national security have changed and he's forced to adapt to the values of a progressive work environment.
Veteran MI5 operative John Hughes is due to meet a British-Iranian informant who claims to have intelligence about a threat to national security, the man is killed before he can talk. All evidence points towards the death being a gangland dispute, but when John secretly meets with a source, the investigation brings him into dangerously close contact with a formidable Stockport gang.
John is still reeling after his discovery that a proxy attack is possibly being planned on UK soil to target a prominent Iranian dissident, but a visit to an informant's widow throws up contradictory evidence. John becomes convinced that there is a cover-up that permeates to the highest level. Meanwhile, John's refusal to accept voluntary redundancy means his relationship with Claire is on thin ice, and a visit from his in-laws only stokes tensions.
John and Mehreen recover from their stand-off with Asadi and the Stockport crime gang and with MI5 now finally on his side, John tracks the general to an upmarket hotel. An unexpected lead from his informant Jordan gives the breakthrough he's been looking for, but he is stunned by a shocking revelation from Mehreen before he can alert his colleagues.
With hours until the suspected attack on a university, John finds himself alone and in captivity. If he is to save the lives of those at risk, he must find a means of escape without alerting the men who are holding him and the allies whom he can no longer trust.
