Brainboxes explores what it's like to be gifted. The programme follows six children in New Zealand, aged from seven to 16, as they experience the highs and lows in striving to achieve goals well beyond their years. How does the school system work for someone operating well beyond their years? And how easy is it to find friends when the people around you just don't think the same way?
The first episode features six children, aged seven to 16 years old. We look at the sheer determination and inner drive of a concert pianist, a pilot, and a young mathematician graduating university before his peers even finish high school.
And we meet the families who sacrifice so much to make sure these extraordinary children can fly as high as their incredible minds allow.
The second programme examines how difficult it can be for a gifted child coming to terms with being different. What happens when you're a square peg in a round hole? How does the school system work for someone operating well beyond their years? And how easy is it to find friends when the people around you just don't think the same way?
We explore the expectations gifted children place on themselves and the pressure they feel from others.
