Caroline Duffy is a successful cartoonist in Manhattan whose eclectic friends are sometimes the subjects of her comic strip. Her best friend, Annie, helps her stay in focus while Caroline's convoluted relationship with her colorist, Richard, also keeps her guessing. Through it all, Caroline maintains a funny outlook on life that inspires the hilarity of her cartoon strip.
Caroline anxiously awaits Richard's response to the message she left on his answering machine -- and then is stunned by what he has to say.
Caroline is already giving individual advice to the newlyweds after their first disagreement; Del tries to land a big account.
Caroline has a date with a novelist, but has to pay Richard to explain the guy's book to her. Meanwhile, Julia gets a job as a waitress.
Richard is upset because his ex-therapist wants to date Annie; Caroline finds out she's been providing free cable to the entire building.
Julia tries to help Caroline take her eyes off Richard by setting her up on a blind date. Meanwhile, Annie attends her high school reunion.
Caroline's former colorist returns to New York and asks her to be an egg donor. Meanwhile, Del misses his Porsche and finds out that it's now owned by an escort service.
Annie tries to claw her way back into "Cats" for one night to impress her mentor, who's in town.
Richard shows Caroline a family ring that he was planning to give to Julia, and soon after, the heirloom disappears.
Richard confronts his former piano teacher, who he believes is guilty of plagiarism; and Caroline starts dating the owner of a possessive dog.
Del urges Caroline to endorse a councilman who publicly mentions her cartoon; and Richard regrets selling his first painting to the guy.
Richard takes a second job -- as a used car salesman; Annie and Caroline wonder if the colorist is cheating on Julia.
Caroline spends Christmas with Del and his family after a snowstorm leaves her parents stranded in Wisconsin; Charlie and his dad share their first holiday together.
Richard and Caroline reveal their past feelings to each other, but agree they've both "moved on"; Del recruits Annie and Charlie to help him upstage his brother.
Trivia wiz Caroline struggles to overcome her stage fright after she agrees to appear on a live radio quiz program that's broadcast nationally. Annie's having trouble coming to terms with how close Seth's family is.
Del hears some shocking news from a former fling who's in town for the weekend; and Richard evaluates Annie's brother's work as a painter.
In an episode that pays homage to "The Outer Limits," Julia and Caroline switch identities, leaving "Julia" bewildered -- about her husband's intentions for the evening.
Trevor has left a toothbrush at Caroline's place and she is worried about the implications -- long term commitment. Annie is happy as her mother is finally leaving. Del and Charlie come up with a publicity stunt using a groundhog and a cape.
Computer phobic Richard becomes addicted to being online at a cyber cafe; Caroline files a complaint against a rude cabbie; and Del ruins Annie's appointment with a famous hair stylist.
Caroline is shocked when her mom expresses her real feelings about the comic strip. Meanwhile, Del and Charlie go to Atlantic City.
For insurance purposes, Del and Charlie pretend to be gay, then Del meets a beautiful woman at a party. Meanwhile, Richard reluctantly agrees to change his appearance.
Annie goes on a blind date with a former priest, and to her own surprise hits it off with him -- particularly when she learns he has never been with a woman but would really, really like to be. Richard attempts to reconcile with Julia's multi-millionaire dad, who is still convinced that Richard is only after Julia for the money, and Caroline becomes convinced by a serious of strange accidents that he is actually trying to kill Richard: a theory Richard poo-poos until he finds himself at the controls of a plummeting plane while Mazzone prepares to parachute to safety.
New York's Stage Deli decides to change the Jo Anne Worley Club to the Caroline in the City Club. Jo Anne starts a very popular campaign to get it changed back. This upsets Caroline as she now feels everybody hates her.
Julia gets her inheritance and urges Richard to quit his job to paint full time, but, sensing his reluctance to leave Caroline, she hires a marriage counselor.
Dr. Leslie is fitting in as a colorist but his former patients keep harassing him. Then Caroline and everybody else also want him to give them relationship advice, which drives him to take an extraordinary measure.
Richard and Julia host a party before leaving on holiday to Spain. After José, a bullfighter invited to the party, evinces an interest in Julia, Annie and Caroline see him in the bedroom having sex with a woman they believe to be Julia. After attempting to hide this from Richard, Caroline inadvertently tells him.
Caroline realises that the woman she saw with José was not Julia, and flies to Spain to tell Richard. Trevor, who has just moved in with Caroline, is not happy. Meanwhile, Del tries to impress a woman by helping her son with baseball.
Looks like something went completely wrong!
