El jardinero tells the story of Elmer and his controlling mother, La China Jurado, who runs a garden centre that hides another thriving underground murder-for-hire business. Killing is easy for Elmer. An accident has left him emotionless. However, while planning the murder of Violet, a charming nursery school teacher, he falls in love with her. Elmer must learn to love while his mother does everything she can to end Violet's life.
Elmer, an assassin posing as a gardener, is tasked with killing Violeta, a seemingly troubled young woman. The police catch wind of a suspected murder.
As Violeta and Elmer grow closer, he lands a new victim. News about his health and newfound feelings lead him to consider defying his mother's orders.
China debates finishing Elmer's job for him. The search for a missing person sparks questions about Violeta's past and her latest partner.
Torres and Carrera visit a professor who may be able to help them. Mother and son grow distant as Elmer tries to convince Violeta to spend time together.
Elmer considers resuming his assignment after an argument with Violeta. Torres and Carrera scope out a possible location of their prime suspect.
Violeta and Elmer both face the reality of their situation. China offers her son a way out — but can he trust her to hide the evidence from the police?
