Turner broadcasting acquired the rights to redub and re-release the Japanese animated TV show Science Ninja Team Gatchaman Science Ninja Team Gatchaman . Like its previous incarnation on American TV, Battle of the Planets, only 85 episodes were redubbed for the series, thirteen of those were episodes that were not used for Battle of the Planets.
While Battle of the Planets edited heavily for violence, this series was edited less and the plot more closely followed that of the original Gatchaman. It did not include the character of 7-Zark-7 who was created for Battle of the Planets, as a time filler for the parts that were cut out. It also restored the script of Jinpei (previously "Keyop", now "PeeWee"). However, Katse (previously Zoltar) went unnamed and only recognized as Gallactor. They dubbed him a robotic voice. It cut many of the scenes with Leader X, now "Computor" as an assistant to Katse instead of a boss called "The Great Spirit" that Katse/Zoltar bowed to. Bowing to a great spirit did not go well at all with religious critic groups. Additionally, they added very loud and monotonous filler music that even occurred whenever somebody talked, which paled in comparison to Battle Of The Planets method of recycling the existing music and adding even more music including an action-packed orchestral theme music, which is highly regarded by Battle of the Planets viewers. Many of the production staff (including voice actors) went uncredited, and there were no title cards.
During its original run, only 13 episode of this series were aired, though all the episodes were eventually broadcast on the Cartoon Network. It is recognized as the first dubbed anime that aired on Cartoon Network.
