How to Make It in America follows two enterprising Brooklyn twentysomethings as they hustle their way through New York City, determined to achieve the American Dream. Trying to make a name for themselves in New York's competitive fashion scene, Ben Epstein and his friend and business partner Cam Calderon use their street knowledge and connections to bring their ambitions to fruition. With the help of Cam's cousin Rene, who is trying to market his own high-energy drink, and their well-connected friend Domingo, the burgeoning entrepreneurs set out to make it big, encountering obstacles along the way that will require all their ingenuity to overcome.
In the premiere of this comedy about Brooklyn entrepreneurs hustling their way to prosperity, Ben and Cam need a quick infusion of cash to pay off a loan to Cam's cousin Rene, who just got out of prison. Meanwhile, Ben's ex, Rachel, is moving on with a new boyfriend, while his old high-school friend, David, could be an important investor.
In debt, once again, to Rene, Ben and Cam search uptown and downtown for a manufacturer to help them get their 1970s-style jeans line off the ground. Meanwhile, Ben meets Rachel to discuss the events following a recent gallery opening.
Ben and Cam find a tailor who's willing to make their jeans sample, but only if they can scrounge up the cash first; Rachel contemplates her future in interior design with Edie after meeting with a college friend who's in the Peace Corps; Rene comes up with an alternate marketing plan for his energy drink.
Dismayed by the prospect of attending a dinner party for Rachel's birthday---with a guest list that includes her current boyfriend---Ben decides to make good on a promise to Kaplan for a night out at an exclusive club.
Feedback from a Japanese buyer forces Ben and Cam to take another look at their business model; Rene's access to a hidden stash of cash is threatened by a relative's divorce; Rachel's desire to spice up her relationship with Darren gets mixed results.
Ben and Cam struggle to satisfy a buyer's demand; Rene prepares for a confrontation with an allegedly thieving contractor; a business trip to Connecticut gets personal for Rachel.
Rene's parole officer wants to see what his client's up to at a meeting with Rasta Monsta's Jamaica-based owner; Rachel is irked by Darren's business proposition to her and Edie; Ben and Cam curtail an obligation to Rene to pick up their shirts from the silk screener.
In the first-season finale, Cam mulls confronting Rene about a recent theft when it involves his and Ben's product. Meanwhile, Rachel makes a life-changing decision that has a major impact on Ben, Edie and Darren.
