Source Code is a documentary series about how the past few years have changed the games industry and the people working in it.
The pandemic, the protests, the war — all of it has impacted game development.
Some people lost their jobs, some had to leave their homes, others found in games a way to speak about reality. At the center of the story are developers from Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia, as well as their colleagues from other countries — speaking about work, burnout, relocation, and about how to keep living when the familiar world begins to fall apart.
In the first episode of the documentary series Source Code, we explore how the COVID-19 pandemic changed the video game industry: amid global lockdowns, the market expanded, audiences grew, and development processes adapted to remote work. We provide a global overview with a focus on Eastern Europe, additionally touching on topics such as crunch and professional burnout, the situation of women in the games industry, and the story behind the cult game This War of Mine.
The second episode of the documentary series Source Code explores how the protests in Belarus following the 2020 elections affected the game development and IT sectors. At its core are the context of the events, the personal stories of developers, their experiences with relocation, and the role of games in politics.
In the third episode of the documentary series Source Code, we examine how Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has transformed the games industry and its professional community — from employee relocation and hiring policies to a reevaluation of relationships within the community itself. We discuss how Ukrainian developers address the theme of war in their games and pose the question: can the games industry today remain outside of politics?
