Vir Das travels across India with his friends to answer the question: "What does India find funny?" In Patiala, they explore comedy and clichés. In Lucknow, the hasya kavis give a masterclass. In Jodhpur, the city welcomes new jesters. In Mysore, a Mysore joke is written. In Kumarakom, comedy after tragedy is explored. In Leh, even the people in the harshest region of the country laugh.
Vir Das, Anu Menon, and Amogh Ranadive travel to Patiala to find out what the most alpha people in the country find funny. Do they love the stereotypes about Punjabis and the terrible jokes on sardaars? More importantly, what do you have to say to make a Punjabi laugh? And of course, there's butter chicken, gedi, rap, and a dhabha.
In the city of palaces, Vir Das takes two friends - an Indian who looks like a foreigner, Ashwin Mushran, and an American who looks like an Indian, Raj Sharma. What is it like to be a jester and make the king laugh? They go to meet the king, but God decides to rain on their parade. Literally. And of course, they do the touristy things like ride camels, eat local food, try local drugs. The usual.
Vir Das takes Anu Menon and Manan Desai to Mysore, home of famous Mysore products like the dosas, the silk and the paks. But nobody knows anything about the city. In a city so original, can Vir write a Mysore joke? What would a Mysore joke even be? To get answers, they explore the city, meet a few experts and steal some sandalwood along the way.
In Kumarakom, Vir Das takes Rohini Ramanathan and Suresh Menon on the backwaters of Kerala. Is Kerala ready to laugh after the terrible tragedy that struck the state? Can the heroes and people of the most literate and bravest state sneak a smile? Will Suresh get a massage? Will Rohini drink toddy? Will Vir learn how to fish? Kumarakom has a few answers.
In the city of love and kebabs, and people who love to eat kebabs, Vir Das, Shruti Seth and Amit Tandon go to the place where comedy in India began. Not the clubs and bars of India's cities, but in the halls of hasyakavis and shaayars of Lucknow. Along the way, they learn to do the perfect aadaab, the tehzeeb, and Amit almost dies… Classic Lucknow.
In the season finale, Vir Das, Ashwin Mushran, and Raj Sharma go to the one place that has more mountains than people. They almost reach Tibet, they hang with donkeys and they dance on the streets. What makes the people of the harshest region in the world laugh?
