Julia Bradbury's Wonders of the Frozen South follows Julia Bradbury on a remarkable 23-day expedition itinerary through the Southern Ocean, travelling to some of the world's most remote and awe-inspiring regions, including the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica.Sailing aboard HX Expeditions' purpose-built expedition ship MS Fram, Julia journeys from the tip of South America, encountering dramatic landscapes, rare wildlife and resilient communities shaped by one of Earth's harshest environments. Each episode focuses on a distinct destination, with the first episode set in the Falkland Islands, the second travelling to the wildlife-rich island of South Georgia, and the final episode culminating in Antarctica itself. From vast ice fields and towering glaciers to windswept coastlines and polar seas, Julia explores the wildlife and delicate ecosystems of these regions, learning from the scientists and specialists dedicated to understanding and protecting these extreme environments.
Julia explores the South Atlantic and Antarctica, beginning by spotting dolphins and seabirds as she crosses unpredictable waters on her way to the Falkland Islands. Julia treks through towering tussock grass to witness the great natural spectacles of the South Atlantic, herds and shears sheep to learn why the brilliant white Falklands wool is so highly prized, and gets up close with the A23a iceberg.
Julia sails to the rugged island of South Georgia, which rises from the South Atlantic and has an extraordinary abundance of wildlife and a haunting human history. Landing on Salisbury Plain, Julia navigates to reach a vast colony of more than 100,000 king penguins that crowd the beach, as well as the whaling station that became polar explorer Ernest Shackleton's salvation, and sees some of the largest seals in the world.
Julia Bradbury journeys to the edge of the world to experience the beauty and brutal conditions of Antarctica as she explores its icy landscapes and extraordinary wildlife. After crossing the Southern Ocean, Julia's boat is surrounded by penguins and seals before a pod of humpback whales finally breaks cover to breath and feed. Following an emotional overnight camp in Paradise Bay, Julia then experiences the raw power of nature thanks to a giant iceberg split.
