"Merchants and Children" is a story on the topical, regardless of time, topic of the relationship between fathers and children. The action takes place in Russia in 1910. The son returns to the house of the patriarchal and conservative merchant of the first guild after his studies. During his studies, thanks to new friends, his views have changed dramatically. However, this categorically does not suit the father, and he is determined to re-educate his son. Will he be able to get everything back on track?
Merchant Namolen is preparing to welcome his son, Kostya, from St. Petersburg. Kostya introduces his father to his new family, the socialist Lisa and the avant-garde poet Lebedev. Namolen is trying to figure out what to do with his son and the Socialists now.
Kostya Namolen is looking for a way to regain his father's respect. And the merchant Namolen is going to throw dust in the eyes of his sworn friend and richer merchant Smirnov in the bathhouse. Marfa Sergeevna is trying to arrange for Kostya to move from the stable to the house.
The strictest inspector of the Russian Empire goes to the Namolin house to check. Merchant Namolen is ready to do anything to appear in the best light. Lisa is trying to raise the level of Kostya and Lebedev's revolutionary training.
Merchant Namolen is going to a reception on the occasion of merchant Smirnov's election as chairman of the Hunting Society. Kostya, Lisa and Others receive a task from the Moscow underground.
Merchant Namolin finds out that Kostya borrowed money from merchant Smirnov. And now Namolin intends to remove this shameful debt from his family name. Kostya is trying to resolve the debt issue through negotiations.
Countess Zhukovskaya, the mother-in-law of merchant Namolen, comes to the house of the Blessed. Marfa Sergeevna and Namolen try to receive the Countess in the best possible way. Kostya is trying to prove to Lisa and the Present that he is primarily a socialist, and not the grandson of the countess.
Kostya, Lisa and the Others are printing flyers right in the house of Prayer. And the merchant Namolen is trying to return to his former quiet life according to his own rules.
Merchant Namolen finds out about the painting, which indecently depicts Marfa Sergeevna, and is going to get this painting by all means. The head of the Moscow underground summons Lisa for a covert operation. Kostya and the Others don't want to stay away.
