Year 202X. Self-driving electric cars have replaced internal combustion engine-based cars, becoming ubiquitous in Japan. However, a racing circuit known as MFG, which employs traditional internal combustion cars, is garnering popularity worldwide.
Kanata Livington, a 19-year-old Japanese-British racer, comes to Japan after graduating from a top racing school in the United Kingdom to take part in MFG and find his missing father, Ken Katagiri. Kanata moves to the home of his late mother's friends—Mr. and Mrs. Saionji—and enters the race under his father's surname, borrowing a Toyota 86 from Ogata, the couple's family friend. Despite the overwhelming disadvantages in specs, Kanata makes it to the top 15 while racing top-tier supercars, demonstrating his phenomenal skills.
Takumi Fujiwara, the legendary downhill and rally racer, turns out to be Kanata's trainer. MFG employees who are familiar with Fujiwara and former racers from the same generation begin to notice Kanata. A new whirlwind is about to set off at MFG.
Katagiri Kanata shows what he's made of in the race on the Ashinoko track! With daring drifts through the dangerous "Death Zone," he secures a provisional eighth place despite tough competition and technical challenges.
On the wet track, Kanata Katagiri impresses with his driving skills. Despite difficult weather conditions, he remains steady in the race, while his competitors struggle with the weather.
Katagiri Kanata drives his Toyota 86 GT remarkably fast, even though he lacks grip on the wet road, and overtakes several more powerful cars. Ikeda praises Kanata's precise driving technique and his experience on European racetracks, which help him under these conditions.
While Kanata continues to keep pace in the wet conditions with the ever-expanding third-place group, Sawatari dukes it out with Beckenbauer for the lead of the race.
A mistake by Oishi sees him exit the race, but he's not the only driver experiencing difficulties as the rain intensifies.
As the competitors enter their third and final lap, the rain starts to ease, but the change in weather conditions brings with it something unexpected.
After schooling the rest of the field on how to drive through the fog, Kanata emerges from the white wall with a big gap to the car behind. Can he stay in front? Meanwhile, the two leaders do battle once more.
Taking advantage of the superior horsepower of his Ferrari, Akaba is hunting Kanata down, and with them running out of road, it'll be a desperate dash to the line for both drivers.
A new rival, Moroboshi Sena, arrives on the scene and introduces himself to Kanata.
The third race on the MFG calendar at the Peninsula Manazaru gets underway and Kanata takes to the course with a major upgrade to the 86.
Kanata sets a rapid time in qualifying, but his mere presence on the grid has seemingly raised the level of a number of his competitors.
Much to his relief, Kanata manages to save Ren in the nick of time, but he bangs his elbow in the process and shifting gears is now a problem. How will he fare in the Peninsula race?
