Port Protection Alaska profiles individuals trying to survive way above the Lower 48. Surrounded by the North Pacific, Port Protection is a remote community tucked into the northwest corner of Prince of Wales Island, Alaska. The approximately 100 residents who call the rugged, unforgiving land home push the limits of survival, living an isolated and risky existence of self-reliance with no roads, government or law enforcement. However, they think the risk is worth the profound reward: a world of beauty with the security of community without the constraints of bureaucracy.
With winter almost upon them, the residents of Port Protection are busy using the remaining days of good weather and daylight to stock their freezers and complete crucial chores.
For the residents of Port Protection, a transition from fall to winter means not only a change in weather conditions but also a change in priorities. Woodsman Curly helps Hans and Timbi with a novel approach to harvesting firewood.
As winter looms, the residents scramble to finish the critical tasks that will carry them through the long, cold months ahead. Mary and Curly head out on a duck hunt that tests their limits and Sam hunts for a Sitka black-tailed deer.
Sam and Stuart go shrimping, Curly heads out to trap for land otters, Amanda makes essential repairs to her new skiff, and Hans and Timbi construct a smokehouse to get them through the long, dark winter.
In order to survive the menacing winter months, residents scramble to gather any remaining necessities. After a few failed hunts, Gary treks deep into the wilderness in search of a doe.
The dark days of winter have come to Port Protection, but that hasn't stopped its residents from continuing their pursuit of a more sustainable life.
As the unnaturally mild winter comes to a close, the residents tackle repairs and community duties, but must work against nature's changing obstacles. Gary rebuilds his boardwalk and Curly makes a 100-mile journey to the nearest dump.
As winter comes to an end, Port Protection residents confront the tenuousness of an Alaskan lifestyle and continue to combat Mother Nature. Curly helps Jiggy with a collapsed tree that threatens to push his home off a cliff.
The community takes advantage of unseasonably warm winter weather to complete necessary builds and essential chores. As Hans and Timbi call on the community to help build a greenhouse, Sam builds experimental octopus pots and goes fishing.
The residents of Port Protection work together to make improvements in their community.
