Rivals dives headfirst into the cut-throat world of independent television in 1986, where the shoulder pads are big and ambitions even bigger. In the fictional upper-class county of Rutshire, a long-standing rivalry between two powerful men is about to boil over: ex-Olympian, Member of Parliament, and notorious womaniser Rupert Campbell-Black, and his Rutshire neighbour Tony Baddingham, controller of the independent TV franchise Corinium Television. As tensions rise and rivalries deepen, there are spilled secrets, forged alliances, and snatched liaisons that draw wives, lovers, colleagues, friends, and families into their battle.
Tony Baddingham is scarred, but alive, and more dangerous than ever. As Declan pitches a new documentary to the BBC and attempts to rebuild his marriage to Maud, a heartbroken Taggie pines for Rupert who vanished without a trace. At a fiercely contested Rutshire Cup polo match, our rivals are pulled back into open war and the battle lines redrawn. But who will pay the price?
Rupert launches his General Election campaign and struggles to balance public ambition and tensions at home. Sarah's career hangs in the balance when Tony pressures her while Venturer is pressured by Corinium.
A scandalous Corinium exposé sends shockwaves through Rutshire and Westminster and Rupert faces mounting pressure on election day over the future of his political career. Declan and Venturer reel from the fallout. As Venturer's future is threatened, Tony exploits their growing divisions and Rupert is forced to confront the true cost of the scandal.
Maud returns to Rutshire, igniting fury from Declan as Tony draws her into Corinium. Rupert tries to find a way forward, only for old sins to resurface. Venturer land a lucky break, but as A Midsummer Night's Dream descends into chaos, Tony seduces Maud with the promise of stardom and her spellbinding turn as Titania makes it clear that ambition comes with a greater cost than she bargained for.
Tony Baddingham drags his wife, Monica, onto daytime television to prove their marriage is intact, while Declan faces romantic and marital unraveling in Ireland. Meanwhile, Rupert turns public disgrace into an opportunity to secure a prime-time television slot for Venturer.
A storm descends on Rutshire as a sordid secret is exposed and the night takes a dark turn.
