Makoto Ito rides the train to and from school every day. However, at the beginning of his second term, he falls in love with a beautiful girl that also rides the train. Unfortunately, she barely knows of his existence. Her name is Kotonoha Katsura, and though they attend the same school, they are not in the same class. In an attempt to catch her eye, Makoto enlists the aid of a close female friend of his: Sekai Saionji. She helps him, despite the fact that she—unbeknownst to Makoto—is in love with him. Thus the three are bound in a love triangle of life-changing proportions.
Makoto Itou develops a crush on his classmate Kotonoha Katsura after seeing her on the train each morning. Encouraged by Sekai Saionji, Makoto gathers the courage to speak to Kotonoha, beginning a fragile and awkward relationship.
Sekai helps Makoto and Kotonoha grow closer, but her own feelings for Makoto deepen. Emotional boundaries blur as Makoto struggles to understand what he truly wants.
Makoto grows distant from Kotonoha while becoming closer to Sekai. Rumors spread through the school, and jealousy begins to take hold among their classmates.
Makoto officially starts dating Sekai, leaving Kotonoha heartbroken. As emotions intensify, Makoto's indecisiveness causes pain to both girls.

Relationships fracture as Makoto's behavior becomes increasingly reckless. Sekai senses something is wrong, while Kotonoha becomes more isolated.
The emotional fallout affects nearly everyone involved. Guilt, denial, and avoidance define Makoto's interactions as tensions quietly escalate.

Conflicting emotions erupt. Secrets are revealed, trust collapses, and the atmosphere grows increasingly unstable.
Makoto becomes emotionally detached, treating relationships casually and cruelly. Kotonoha's grip on reality weakens, and Sekai reaches a breaking point.
Resentment and obsession peak. Miscommunication and emotional neglect push everyone toward irreversible actions.
The story reaches its infamous conclusion as emotional collapse turns into tragedy. The consequences of selfishness, denial, and obsession are fully realized.
