This is Granada Television's definitive Sherlock Holmes, starring the late Jeremy Brett. We are calling this show Sherlock Holmes (1984), but the episodes were made between 1984 and 1994 and were first broadcast under the various titles of Conan Doyle's collections of Holmes stories:

Series 1 & 2: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Series 3 & 4: The Return of Sherlock Holmes
Series 5 & 6: The Case-book of Sherlock Holmes
Series 7: The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes

Two specials, lasting two hours each and based on Doyle's two full-length Holmes books, The Sign of Four and The Hound of the Baskervilles, were included in The Return of Sherlock Holmes.

David Burke played Holmes's literary side-kick, Dr John Watson, in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, while Edward Hardwicke (pictured, right, on this page, with Brett as Holmes) took on the role for all other seasons.
