Space Shuttle Columbia: The Final Flight examines the 2003 Space Shuttle disaster, in which Columbia broke apart in the skies over Texas. This four-part series combines first-hand testimony alongside previously unseen archive footage to chart the in-depth story of the Columbia tragedy. At the heart of this story are the people who lived through it all – the astronauts' wives, husbands and children, NASA staff, members of the Accident Investigation team, and a journalist, some of whom have never spoken before. The series reveals how and why the disaster happened, exploring human space travel's inherent risks and rewards.
In 2003, seven astronauts count down to the launch of the Space Shuttle Columbia's 28th mission, unaware of the tragic fate that awaits.
A debris strike on the shuttle's left wing raises alarms at NASA. Meanwhile, the crew, unaware, continues the 16-day mission, communicating with their families through emotional video conferences.
Sixteen minutes from landing, Mission Control loses contact with the crew. As live television shows debris falling, NASA fears the worst, prompting East Texas residents to mobilize in one of America's largest search efforts.
After the disaster, NASA is under pressure to provide answers. The disaster's investigation highlights its flawed safety culture and management failures, causing uncertainty for the future of American space travel
