After the sinking of the ship "Mary Jane", some passengers have survived on an island, they are: the Lindberg family, the young Englishwoman Caty, Sergeant Holt, a boy named David and Billy, who worked as a seaman. David must still cope with the fact that his parents didn't survive the accident . Sergeant Billy Holt believes he has recognized Irving as a former convict and suspects him of committing some crimes. Nevertheless, they are all mutually dependent. Together the survivors look forward to be rescued.
A tribute to man's will to survive, the serial, titled Castaway, was screened at 7.30 p.m., Sundays, starting February 24, 1974. Consisting of 13 half-hour episodes, it was produced by Castaway Productions in association with the ABC, Scottish Television, and Bayerischer Rundfunk (West Germany).
The story revolves around the hardships and adversities suffered by survivors of a shipwreck on an unnamed Pacific island in the 1880s.
The sailing ship Mary Jane, bound for Australia with a mixed company of settlers, militia, convicts and crew goes down in a hurricane.
Castaway was filmed in color on location near Port Macquarie and the scene where the Mary Jane goes down was staged at Narrabeen, near Sydney. A simulated poop deck of the Mary Jane was built over two high water towns and shooting attempted during a violent storm.
The cast includes three German actors Fred Haitiner (who plays the migrant head of a family), Renate Schroeter and Volker Eckstein. Britain's contribution is Isobel Black (credits, The Troubleshooter, Red Gauntlet and Out of the Unknown). Others with featured roles are Lexia Wilson, Peter Gwynne, John Bowman, Don Barkham, Alan Cinis.
