The Forsytes chronicles the lives, loves, trials and triumphs of a wealthy late Victorian stockbroking family, whose generations are torn between the tradition and self-sacrifice versus personal happiness and the pursuit of love. Family stability is threatened by two chance encounters for rival cousins, Jolyon and Soames, throwing their previously steady lives into disarray.
Ten years after Jolyon Forsyte's marriage to high-society favourite Frances, he prepares to celebrate his daughter June's 18th birthday and entrance into society. Meanwhile, the question of the succession of family firm Forsyte & Co hangs heavily in the air with brothers - and rivals - Jolyon Sr and James battling for their own sons to take over as chairman.
An opportunity arises to invest in a risky gold-mining venture, highlighting the clash between Jolyon's cautious approach and the board's aggressive stance on profit above all. James and Soames are further convinced he is entirely at odds with the firm's objectives and their attempts to oust him intensify. Irene contends with her new reality of destitution by seeking employment, while Soames tries to alleviate her anguish by taking her on various outings.
James's scheme to oust Jolyon backfires. Soames solidifies his engagement to Irene.
Jolyon assures Frances and June he has cut ties with Louisa. Frances resumes her efforts to secure Horatio for June. In Paris, Soames realises he doesn't fit in with Irene's friends.
At Forsyte & Co, the climbing Ceylon Gold share price casts doubt on Jolyon's cautious approach. Disaster strikes at the Ceylon Gold Mine, prompting the share price to plumet.
Jolyon Sr announces Jolyon will be giving the jubilee gala speech, while Irene admits to mourning the life she was promised. June is ecstatic when Soames commissions Philip to build a country house, while Ann tells Jolyon she will cover Falconer's losses.
