The Last Tommy

Documentary series telling the stories of Britain's last surviving World War I veterans, known as Tommies. As the platoon of 27 veterans alive in 2003 is further depleted, they tell their story from 1916 to the end of the War. The Battle of the Somme in 1916 is the biggest human disaster of the war, with 20,000 killed in the first eight hours. For two years the Tommies endure the trenches, then take part in the most successful campaign the British Army has undertaken. 106-year-old Harry Patch takes a last pilgrimage back to the Western Front.
