With exclusive access to Basildon University Hospital, part of Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, The Young Midwives of Essex will offer a unique insight into the life of the junior midwives in a way that you've never seen before. The series will blend documentary and reality techniques to bring a fresh approach to the genre, while also using social media to help frame the narratives.The dynamic cast - a tightknit group - will be made up of a mixture of student midwives, their teachers, and newly qualified midwives, following their early-starts and 12-hour shifts, through to their home lives and evenings out together. Midwives are able to qualify after just three years, making them some of the youngest medical professionals in Britain.
At just 24-years-old Mollie makes being a midwife look easy as she helps a woman to give birth, but Mary is still getting used to her new surroundings and after a tough shift is doubting herself.
Newly-qualified Tacha is still getting to grips with the pace of a busy ward. Summah, who is registered blind, uses all her experience in theatre.
Student midwives Ruby and Grace are in the second year of their studies and are now learning on the job. Summah and her friend Lilli enjoy cocktails and a takeaway.
The preceptorship midwives undergo bereavement training, while Aimee helps a family who have lost their baby.
As Summah and Lilli touch down in Tenerife for a well-earned break, male midwife Howie helps Natasha give birth. Mollie is back on shift with some exciting news.
