The Secret Life of the Zoo takes a look behind the scenes of Chester Zoo. Using a range of filming techniques, including micro-rigs to capture close up animal behaviour, it will explore what the animals get up to, as well as their relationships with the keepers.
Giraffe Orla is pregnant, but with the length of giraffes' legs and the size of their calves, the birth is always risky. As Orla goes into labour, the keepers must watch from the sidelines; will baby Narus arrive safely? Bornean orangutan Sarikei also has a new baby. His name is Tombol and it's not long before he's out exploring the habitat and testing his luck with his housemates, the gibbons. Male sengi Stud has sired multiple babies at Chester. He's meant to be finally retiring from breeding. His son needs to step up and take over but is afraid of everything, even his own food. How will he cope when he faces a female for the first time? Northern bald ibis chick Professor X is proving too confident for his own good. When it's time to release him into the adult habitat, he gets into troubled waters and needs rescuing. He receives a head injury and goes into shock, so the vets need to work hard to help him pull through.
Chester Zoo's penguins move into a temporary home while a new luxury pad is built for them. But the move becomes dramatic and upsetting as malaria sweeps the colony. Will elder statesman Rudd overcome his old age and health issues and survive against the odds? Sumatran orangutan Emma gives birth but her five-year-old son Tripa is struggling with developmental issues and is half the size of other orangutans his age. He relies on Mum for everything and is reluctant to leave her side. Will Mum turning her attention to the new baby give Tripa the impetus he needs to venture out and start playing with his cousins? The African painted dog pups venture out of their den for the first time but runt of the litter Mosi refuses to go out into the cold. Keepers are concerned that she has issues with her eyesight, which could be fatal for a pup in the wild.
Spider monkey Kiara becomes a mum for the first time but seems more interested in hanging out with the youngsters than taking on maternal responsibilities. When Kiara's baby's tail's grip on her starts to loosen, keepers are worried that the baby is becoming weak and may fall to its death. Naked mole-rat sisters Leftie and Rightie, who are both pregnant, battle for their mum's throne. As the duelling gets more vicious, a litter of babies is born. But the babies are forgotten in the chaos, and the keepers must find a solution to the conflict. Babirusa Sausu moves from paddock to paddock to mate with Chester's various females. But when he's reintroduced to his old flame Majene, their daughter Sula puts a stop to his mating mission. Meanwhile, baby capybara Henry enjoys having the attention of all the female capybaras.
The keepers struggle to transport a suspicious warthog and a giraffe. Caiman lizard Gary keeps diving into the pool headfirst, even when it's empty. A baby gibbon is a passion killer for its parents.
