The Secret Life of the Zoo takes a look behind the scenes of Chester Zoo. Using a range of filming techniques, including micro-rigs to capture close up animal behaviour, it will explore what the animals get up to, as well as their relationships with the keepers.
Spider monkey Mary, who's 50, has had 19 children and the Chester Zoo keepers are concerned that another pregnancy could be risky. They introduce a new younger female, Kiara, to the group in the hope that Mary's long-term partner Popoyan will develop a relationship with her instead. But Popoyan seems to be more of a romantic than the keepers thought. The zoo hope to breed dominant female giant otter Icana with new arrival Diego, but Icana's daughter Runa has a chronic liver condition, so she has other things on her mind. Then a tragic turn of events changes the family dynamic. Sloths Tina and Rico live together at the zoo, spending up to 18 hours a day asleep. But for the past three years Tina has spent her waking moments giving Rico a hard time. Now there's a plan to try and bring them closer together. And keepers embark on a speed dating event with three-legged chameleon Tripod. Will she go for number one, number two or number three? Or will they all be dismissed at the first hurdle?
Golden poison frog Pablo has lost interest in his partner Maria, so bad boy El Loco is brought in to shake things up. In the chimpanzee habitat there's a power struggle for the role of dominant female. And baby porcupine Marion faces off the meerkat mob.
Critically endangered rhino Zuri gives birth to baby Ike. Otter Annie has three new pups. Camel Shan-shan is unwell. And sun bears Toni and Millie have relationship problems.
It's nightfall at Chester and the zoo's 800 nocturnal inhabitants start to wake up. Aardvark Koos is showing a potentially romantic interest in his sister Himba, but the zoo needs to ensure that their animals are breeding from the right genetic pool. As daylight arrives the keepers try to coax Himba into a crate to take her to another zoo. But she's now half-asleep and proving to be a stubborn aardvark, so it's not easy. It's time for nocturnal mouse deer Una to leave her parents and meet a mate. The zoo have a new space for her and her future partner Biani but she's proving shy, and hides in her new nesting box day and night. Can the arrival of Biani persuade her to come out? It's the final lunar cycle of the seahorses' mating season. Seahorses are one of the few species where the male gives birth, and clumsy underdog Seabiscuit needs to attract a female in the next week so that he can incubate her eggs and give birth at the next full moon.
