From around 700AD to the Norman conquest of England in 1066, the Vikings of the Nordic lands raided and traded across northern, central, eastern and western Europe to create a feared and notorious empire.Now, almost two millennia after their often-terrifying reign, Yesterday uses the modern age to uncover secrets from the Viking Age. By investigating burial sites, Viking Dead asks who the Norsemen really were, what the truth was about the raids and battles, and what every-day life in a Viking settlement entailed.All these questions are answered thanks to examinations of some key archaeological and historical sites.
Episode one kicks off by looking at the claim that the English did not warmly welcome their Viking visitors. Conflict appears to have been common. There is dramatic evidence for this at several places in southern England, especially at a site called Ridgeway near Weymouth, Dorset.
In 2009, a mass grave was found in Dorset. What can the skeletons reveal about how these Vikings met their gruesome end?
In Estonia, the earliest known Viking ships to have crossed the Baltic and the earliest examples of mass ship burials have been uncovered.
A preserved Viking ship was found in Norway. Buried with the ship were two skeletons, but does the evidence point to sacrifice or a funeral?
