Time: The Kalief Browder Story is a documentary series chronicling the life of a 16 year-old student from the Bronx who spent three years on Rikers Island without ever being convicted of a crime. Kalief Browder was walking home from a party when he was arrested for allegedly stealing a backpack. He spent an unconscionable three years in jail awaiting trial--two of which were spent in solitary confinement. Charges were ultimately dropped, and Browder took his own life shortly after being released. Browder's tragic story has galvanized activists and reformers alike in the name of justice. The documentary series will feature first-person accounts, archival footage, and cinematic recreations of key scenes from Browder's life, as well as exclusive interviews from a wide range of those connected to the story, from politicians to close friends and family members to social reformers.
Kalief refuses to plead guilty in his case, demanding a trial; Kalief is caught in the revolving door of solitary confinement and endures torture in the name of justice while his case crawls through a stagnant court.
After a delay in the case, a missing witness is found that reveals sloppy detective work; Kalief is faced with time served but refuses to plead guilty to a crime he didn't commit, and is released a month later without explanation.
Kalief becomes a folk hero and the poster child of a broken system, attracting journalists and celebrities as he fights for justice, but he begins to deteriorate under the bright spotlight of the media.
Family tensions are high when Kalief's estranged father tries to take over the case and settlement negotiation; Kalief's mother Venida fights depression and bad health, and suffers a massive heart attack.
