Maggie takes care of her 4-year-old grandson Zack after he was abandoned by his mother, Corinne, three years earlier. Corinne resurfaces and wants the little boy back. Maggie is relieved to have her daughter back, but doubts that she is fit to take care of Zack. Corinne seems to have sorted out her problematic past: she is now sober and separated from Joey, her toxic ex-partner. Can it last? Their lives will be turned upside down.
Maggie and her grandson, Zack, whom she has been caring for alone for three years, see their daily lives completely turned upside down when Corinne, Maggie's daughter, returns sober and demands custody of her son.
When Maggie calls on the DPE to resolve the conflict, her past resurfaces and she tries to get along with Corinne. An unexpected return threatens to complicate matters.
While Maggie thinks everything is going well, Corinne, who believes she is in control, is falling back into her bad habits.
A major event shakes the lives of Maggie, Corinne, and Zack. The DPE (Department of Personal Safety) wonders who is best suited to ensure Zack's safety.
Corinne emerges. Maggie has to make a difficult choice. Corinne feels she has no other option but to seek help… little suspecting that she will create a shockwave bigger than expected.
