On the street he meets Engel, who informs him that he is looking for a Polish prostitute involved in the death of Kessler's adjutant and the hunt for an enemy radio station operating in Gdańsk. Thanks to the book he bought, Franz deciphers a clue sent from London about how to damage a new torpedo tested by the Germans. When Ilse asks Franz about the cipher she found, Franz convinces her that it is part of his job as an Abwehr officer.

While Franz secretly experiences his father's death, the furious Kessler searches for the person responsible for the failure of the homing torpedo program. Roza is also suffering after Kurkowski's death, and Lothar informs her that he has been assigned to investigate Kurt's death. Anna meets with Franz and tells how the Polish intelligence faked her death to get him to cooperate. He also informs him that due to Kessler's increased vigilance, Franz is temporarily removed from espionage duties.

Right after discovering Franz's spy activities, Ilse dies in an accident - in fact, killed by Anna. The day after Ilse's death, Franz is summoned to Kessler. He accidentally learns that Kessler does not suspect Franz that Ilse's death had anything to do with him. Kessler knows that Franz was with his wife when Ilse died!
