After a night out, 19-year-old Kenia Monge appeared to need help getting home. That's when the owner/baker of a small granola bar business stepped in to assist, offering her a ride in his van. But Kenia never made it home and was never heard from again. Months later, another young woman in a nearby town was found in a coma, brutally beaten and clinging to life. When police started the investigation into the attack, it led detectives to question whether they were connected — and shockingly discovered that one of the women was holding the answer to both cases right in her hand.
When Samantha Stites, a bright, outgoing college freshman, met Christopher Thomas in 2011, an unsettling obsession took hold. For many years, Christopher stalked Samantha, sometimes stealthily and sometimes openly. He showed up consistently wherever she went — restaurants, grocery stores, sporting events and more — until an early fall morning in 2022, when the harassment turned into something unimaginably dangerous. Christopher broke into her home, kidnapped and restrained her, and transported her to a soundproof bunker that he had constructed in a storage unit near her Michigan home. Cut off from the outside world and completely alone, Samantha had to summon every ounce of strength to survive and escape. Samantha shares her story, recounting more than a decade of fear, resistance and resilience. Featuring police interview footage, surveillance from the storage unit, and disturbing images and videos recovered from Christopher's phone.
Nearly two decades after Michael King was convicted for the murder of 21-year-old mother Denise Amber Lee, he was executed in March with Denise's husband and son in attendance. This Friday, "20/20" revisits the case of this young mother who was kidnapped and murdered following a series of chilling 911 calls, including new interviews with Denise's husband and son following that execution. "20/20" co-anchor Deborah Roberts reports.
In 1989, 11-year-old Jacob Wetterling was biking home with his brother and best friend when a masked, armed man abducted him just a half mile from his home. This Friday, "20/20" reports on Minnesota's most notorious kidnapping case and speaks to Jared Scheierl, who at age 12 was abducted by the same man who would kidnap Jacob Wetterling months later. DNA found on Scheierl's clothing led authorities to a suspect who made a stunning confession 27 years later. Co-Anchor Deborah Roberts sits down with Jacob's parents, Patty and Jerry Wetterling, as well as blogger Joy Baker, whose research helped push for a new review of the case.
