January 30, 1933: Hindenburg appoints Hitler as Reich Chancellor. Germany is on the brink of dictatorship. Members of the resistance arrive at the Berlin Press Ball that evening. While dancing with Gereon, Charlotte spots a murder suspect among the guests. Dr. Forster is suspected of having strangled his receptionist. Shortly before the arrest, Forster disappears—and Gereon with him.

Dr. Forster is keeping explosive details about his hospital patient, Hitler, under wraps. Charlotte suspects that the Nazis want to eliminate the psychiatrist—just as they do all their opponents. More and more people are disappearing. "Nationalist forces" are taking over the castle. At home, Charlotte discovers Gereon's explosive legacy. There is still no sign of him. On stage at the Mikado Bar, Charlotte dances to overcome her fears.

Charlotte is searching for Hitler's medical records from 1918. Goebbels stages the funeral of an SA member as a state ceremony against "red murderers." Göring orders mass arrests. The SA infiltrates the police force. Chief Inspector Böhm makes a discovery that Charlotte absolutely must know about. While the political division is being infiltrated by the Nazis, Böhm and Charlotte continue their investigation in secret.

Flashback: Dr. Forster, Gereon, and his brother have fled the press ball. Gereon accompanies Dr. Forster on his escape to Paris. During a stopover in Cologne, they experience a turbulent night during Carnival. In the morning, thanks to Gereon's father's intervention, the two fly to Paris as part of Adenauer's entourage. At the airport, the German ambassador is waiting with an arrest warrant, and in the exiles' café, a familiar melody plays.

Gereon wakes up, severely beaten, in a Berlin SA prison next to the journalist Heymann. Anyone who opposes the movement at the castle has to deal with State Councilor Wendt. Resistance is now only possible if it's well disguised. Ms. Behnke prepares for this role. Another former patient from Dr. Forster's days at the military hospital is dead. Böhm suspects a series of murders, but Wendt sidelines him.

At Lieberberg Castle, Nyssen eagerly anticipates his meeting with Hitler. Gereon is released by Wendt, but must continue to fear for his life. Right before his eyes, the prisoners begin to be transported from the SA prison to the camp. Among them are Heymann and Katelbach, who are preparing to escape. Their plan fails. At home, Gereon is met by an SA assassination squad and a desperate, furious Charlotte.

February 27, 1933. Rath, Wegener, and the Armenian are carrying out a risky plan for the dinner at Lieberberg Castle. At the same time, the young Dutchman van der Lubbe sets out for the Reichstag. Armed with an SA ID card, he will be able to get past the guards. Böhm intercepts Charlotte at the Wannsee to warn her: Under no circumstances should she and Gereon return to their apartment. Widow Behnke also closes a door behind her.

Nyssen welcomes his guests from the business and political worlds. The first flames break out at the Reichstag. A bomb explodes at the palace. Anyone who gives a speech now is doomed. Rath realizes too late the grave mistake of the moment. Inside the Reichstag, he relives the trauma of his life for a second time. Anyone who escapes the flames must leave Germany tomorrow. The dark age begins. The dance is over.
