Bangers & Cash follows the Mathewsons - a dynasty of classic car auctioneers from picturesque North Yorkshire. The charismatic and friendly family hunt for rare vehicles to sell and they uncover some remarkable and heartwarming stories behind the cars as they do.
A near-perfect ‘50s Chevy panel van and a very desirable low-mileage ‘80s Brooklands Capri tempt auctioneer Derek out of Yorkshire, but traffic chaos on the way to Wales puts him way behind schedule. "I can't be late, I've got no pyjamas" ...says a worried Derek as he realises he is going to have to overnight across the border.
Safely back in Yorkshire, he evaluates the cars ahead of the auction - two of the best he has seen. The vehicles' owners have high expectations, the reserves are top end - and the auction is days away.
Paul picks up a stunning Matchless Model X motorbike which attracts a lot of pre-auction attention from some vintage motorcycle fans, and Derek and grandson Charlie spend the day at Stokesley Classic Car Show. It's not a relaxing day out for the pair as they've been set a monumental task - valuing the 200 classic cars.
The summer brings an increase in business for Yorkshire classic car auctioneers. To keep pace, the Mathewsons introduce their new "multiple classic collection plan", much to the amusement of office manager Sarah. Dave sets off to collect a Triumph TR6, a Lotus Cortina and a Mini Mayfair wedding car and bring them back to the auction house.
The team heads to The Wirral for a rare survivor, a DAF 33 from the ‘70s. "It's a car that had a bit of an image issue back in the day, but it also had a gearbox ahead of its time," says Derek - as everyone tries to explain how it works before the car is auctioned off.
Auctioneer Derek ventures across The Channel to repatriate a very elegant 1960s' Bentley S3 which the French don't want - because it's right-hand drive.
A well-restored Ford Fiesta XR2 sets the auction alight and there is fierce competition for the eighties' classic, showing that there is still a good market for classic fast Fords.
And there's a very rare appearance when a cult classic turns up. The Mini Moke, a car made famous in ‘60s TV classic The Prisoner is released for auction. It may be impractical, it is uncomfortable - but will it fetch good money when the hammer comes down?
A delightful collection of pre-loved and well-looked after British classics comes up for auction, including an Austin A35, a Wolseley 16/60, a Ford Fiesta Popular and a rare Hillman Avenger Estate. The collection stirs many fond memories from potential buyers at the vehicle auction, but is that enough to make them raise their hands and bid for the British classics? Meanwhile, when the time comes to sell a much-loved and enjoyed ‘E' type Jag, its Yorkshire owner finds it hard to let go.

The haul also includes Stanley, the Standard Vanguard Vignale. Meanwhile, when the time comes to sell a much-loved and enjoyed ‘E' type Jag, its Yorkshire owner finds it hard to let go.
Three "new" old MGs, still covered in factory wax turn up after 40 years in storage. Hard to value, they cause a lot of interest. Will they be restored by their new owners - or left as they are? Even the Midget and Sprite Club members who arrive to give them the once-over, can't agree on the best plan for the unique find.
Paul travels to West Yorkshire to try to release Dixie, an ex-police Morris 1000 panda car, from her garage prison where she's been languishing underneath a pile of cardboard. Once back at the auction house, Derek gives her the once-over, and the all-important pre-auction valuation for a car with "a very specialist market".
And not for the faint-hearted, an exceptionally quick, highly-tuned and much-modified TR7 V8 rally car goes under the hammer. And Derek - the man who can't say no - says yes to auctioning a 1980s fairground ride.
A trio of rare and beautiful Alvises get the auction buyers going when they come under the hammer; a Chevy Corvette which started its journey in Saudi Arabia makes its way to Thornton le Dale for the sale; and an apprentice mechanic, who worked at the garage 70 years ago, makes a nostalgic return trip.
Dave sets out to collect a fast Ford from the 80s and has a nasty surprise when he opens the bonnet; there's much love for a scooter with Italian flair and German engineering; an Austin Heavy 12 nearly a century old sets off a bidding war at the auction; and 11-year-old Charlie road-tests a Raleigh Chopper for the 70s - it's brutal.
Derek has to corral the whole Mathewson clan to help him drag a mini pickup out of the barn where it's been for 20 years; a statesman-like Rover P5 glides into the saleroom; and a lovely 350cc Douglas Mark V motorbike from 1950 (in polychromatic blue) goes under the hammer.
Four VW camper vans pitch up at the auction house looking for a new home. Sarah chooses her hippy van of choice on the basis of its hair dryer capabilities.
When his father insists he sets off on a long journey to pick up a very rare ‘80s Reliant Scimitar convertible, Paul has his doubts. When he returns with a different car, which he describes as a "tatty old thing that needs a lot of work", it causes heated family discussions.
Derek picks up an Austin 16 that "goes like stink and has some unusual modern modifications". But it's a 1940s car that divides opinion, and he takes the grandkids for a day out to the Yorkshire coast, with a couple of car-related stop offs en route.
