Shortly before the end of their time together in Rosenheim, inspectors Laura and Thomas Schmidt have to deal with a mysterious case: a dead man is found in front of their office door. Who is the man? His papers identify him as a Spanish citizen named José Barthol. But there are doubts as to whether this is his true identity. Stefan Ertl, workshop manager of the renowned picture frame shop Waasner, is found lifeless by his colleagues. Who surprised him at work at night? Inspectors Stadler and Hansen first try to find out whether it might be a fake burglary. Who could have been interested in harming Ertl and why? The large landowner Claudius von Rentingen was deceived by him and the silent partner Peter Stuber was also deceived.But then coroner Ela Atay comes with new results and an unbelievable suspicion: Isn't Thomas Ritter dead and the whole thing just a staging? The inspectors are about to hand the case over to their colleagues when things take a turn and everything has to be reopened. Meanwhile, caretaker Winkler is taking inventory in the police station and is looking for a technical device that has disappeared but urgently needs to be found. While he is supported by Grasegger and Lange, Eighties and Donato should not find out about the matter.
