Doctors is a British medical soap opera which first broadcast in the United Kingdom on BBC One on 27 March 2000. Set in the fictional Midlands town of Letherbridge, defined as being close to the city of Birmingham, the soap follows the staff and their families of a doctor's surgery.
Doctors is produced by BBC Birmingham and is screened on BBC One, with the first episode broadcast on 27 March 2000. It was created by Chris Murray, with Mal Young developing it and Carson Black the original producer. The show has been shown at lunchtime since its inception, originally at 12.30pm as a lead-in to the BBC's One O'Clock News. After it was temporarily moved to allow for extended news coverage of the September 11th 2001 attacks, its regular slot changed to 2:10 pm, following directly after Neighbours, after ratings rose to a 25% audience share. When the BBC lost Neighbours to Channel 5 in January 2008, it moved into the Australian soap's old slot of 1:45pm. For a brief trial period in Summer 2000, selected episodes from the first series were shown on Fridays at 7 pm and from 16 February 2009, the show began transmitting in high definition on BBC HD at 4:00pm the same day. Heston turns investigator when an eccentric homeless man, an old acquaintance, leaves him a rather unusual task in his will. Daniel receives an unexpected proposal, while Mrs Tembe decides it is time for affirmative action against Sutton Vale and recruits Sid, but will it all go to plan?
When Ayesha bumps into an old school friend at the Mill, she grows increasingly concerned about her behaviour, but what is she hiding? Daniel tries to canvas opinion on his potential new venture, while Mrs Tembe spends the day firefighting as the threat from Sutton Vale grows.
When a young carer is accused of murdering an elderly man, Rob and Emma try to seek the truth. But do they trust the carer or the local gossip who is known for making false allegations? Daniel becomes a target when Al and Jimmi see an opportunity for mischief, while Ayesha steps into the lion's den that is Sutton Vale Medical Centre.
Al soon wishes he hadn't got involved when he follows a trail laid out on a patient's phone. Mrs Tembe has to deal with the possibility of losing staff, while Karen returns from holiday to less than good news.
Sid attends a burglary but isn't sure that all is as it seems. Mrs Tembe plays Mr Smail a visit, while Daniel has his first shift as a shopping channel presenter.
When Jimmi sees a beggar clearly ill, he tries to get involved to help. Mrs Tembe and Emma team up to try to get the better of Smail, while Ruhma prepares Shak for university life.
Ruhma is stuck in the middle when two sisters are at odds over an imminent birth. Emma and Zara try to catch up on work at home, while Valerie tries to persuade Ayesha to read a self-help book.
Rob and Emma have to play detective to identify a young girl brought in for shoplifting. Valerie is tasked with a serious job, while Heston thinks he is being forgotten.
It's the first day of the Minor Surgery Unit, and Heston is very excited. Meanwhile, Ruhma takes Shak off to university, and Karen continues to look for James.
Daniel gets hooked into an interview with a student and ends up going viral for all the wrong reasons. Karen's concern for James continues, and Ayesha finds herself drawn closer to Leo when she gets an insight into what his job means to him.
James tells Karen the heart-breaking story of what life was like for him on the streets. At the station Rob is tasked with finding a homeless man who has gone missing after being attacked while he slept.
Whilst on a VPAS visit, Mrs Tembe discovers the patient is no longer in need of help, but her son is. Karen and James take a step closer to getting a diagnosis, and Valerie helps Shak avoid his mum when he turns up at the campus with an embarrassing issue.
Al feels uncomfortable when he is dragged into a situation with a patient. Karen is keen to get things moving for James, while Zara pushes Emma towards a colleague.
