Doctors is a British medical soap opera which first broadcast in the United Kingdom on BBC One on 27 March 2000. Set in the fictional Midlands town of Letherbridge, defined as being close to the city of Birmingham, the soap follows the staff and their families of a doctor's surgery.
Doctors is produced by BBC Birmingham and is screened on BBC One, with the first episode broadcast on 27 March 2000. It was created by Chris Murray, with Mal Young developing it and Carson Black the original producer. The show has been shown at lunchtime since its inception, originally at 12.30pm as a lead-in to the BBC's One O'Clock News. After it was temporarily moved to allow for extended news coverage of the September 11th 2001 attacks, its regular slot changed to 2:10 pm, following directly after Neighbours, after ratings rose to a 25% audience share. When the BBC lost Neighbours to Channel 5 in January 2008, it moved into the Australian soap's old slot of 1:45pm. For a brief trial period in Summer 2000, selected episodes from the first series were shown on Fridays at 7 pm and from 16 February 2009, the show began transmitting in high definition on BBC HD at 4:00pm the same day. Mrs Tembe does a talk at the church but struggles with her young audience. Can she win them over? Al extends a hand of friendship to Daniel, but will it be accepted? Rob faces an internal investigation after a serious allegation is made. He insists he has done nothing wrong, but can he prove his innocence?
Ruhma is overcome with emotion as she reminisces about Heston. Is she regretting her recent decision? Meanwhile, Mrs Tembe has something to confess that could jeopardise any plans she might have with Gordon. Daniel and Zara almost put their troubled past to bed, but a stark reminder of someone threatens to destroy the moment.
Zara reaches her breaking point with Daniel and presents him with an unusual proposition. Karen and Valerie fish for gossip when an unexpected visitor turns up with a surprise for Mrs Tembe. Sid sees an elderly patient who is confused and can't remember how she cut her hand. Sid later discovers the dark truth lies in a bottle of pills.
Al decides he is the best person to help Alia with her future plans. Mrs Tembe and Gordon put on a show when they realise they are being spied on, but there is a shock for Mrs Tembe at the end of it. Sid finds himself in hot water when he considers getting intimate with someone and then discovers she is his patient's girlfriend.
Zara makes a big effort to get her relationship with Daniel back on track, but is it too much too soon? Mrs Tembe has to make a big decision about her future with Gordon. Tensions run high at the police station when Rob arrests a young woman in connection with the missing child of a police officer.
Mrs Tembe comes to a decision about Gordon, and Ayesha puts her foot in it while trying to help Al 'get out more'. Daniel helps an insecure boss see that life is too short for male pride.
Emma tries to see through Zara's mask at a speed spa, and Mrs Tembe has some crushing news for Gordon. Karen tries to stop a jealous son wrecking his mum's new relationship but starts to think that he might have a real cause for concern.
