Doctors is a British medical soap opera which first broadcast in the United Kingdom on BBC One on 27 March 2000. Set in the fictional Midlands town of Letherbridge, defined as being close to the city of Birmingham, the soap follows the staff and their families of a doctor's surgery.
Doctors is produced by BBC Birmingham and is screened on BBC One, with the first episode broadcast on 27 March 2000. It was created by Chris Murray, with Mal Young developing it and Carson Black the original producer. The show has been shown at lunchtime since its inception, originally at 12.30pm as a lead-in to the BBC's One O'Clock News. After it was temporarily moved to allow for extended news coverage of the September 11th 2001 attacks, its regular slot changed to 2:10 pm, following directly after Neighbours, after ratings rose to a 25% audience share. When the BBC lost Neighbours to Channel 5 in January 2008, it moved into the Australian soap's old slot of 1:45pm. For a brief trial period in Summer 2000, selected episodes from the first series were shown on Fridays at 7 pm and from 16 February 2009, the show began transmitting in high definition on BBC HD at 4:00pm the same day. Zara has a revelation about the murder case. Ayesha discovers just what Ruhma has been up to. Emma starts off supporting a patient during her PIP assessment but ends up playing counsellor to the assessor.
A last-minute testimony is heard as the case comes to a close. Rob investigates an accusation of romance fraud but the case is not as cut and dry as it seems.
Daniel cannot wait to get involved with the Christmas plans, but Zara clearly feels differently. Ruhma makes a horrific discovery about Besa's past and risks her own future to help her. Valerie learns the hard way that not everyone can be helped.
Jimmi feels the pressure but the Christmas video is finally revealed. Ruhma feels the strain with Besa and finds herself running out of time. Barry spends the day performing good deeds for others but is then humiliated in front of the staff from The Mill.
Emma is left disappointed when Sid makes an announcement. Al has a huge change of heart about the new working patterns, and Ruhma's secrets are almost exposed. Sid sees a patient who could get a kidney transplant, but she might have a chest infection. Does this mean it can't go ahead?
Al offers to cover the evening shift for the second day in a row and insists he is just being nice, but has he got an ulterior motive? Rob and Karen have to say an emotional goodbye. Al has to think fast when Valerie finds herself in danger as a patient high on codeine threatens her.
Al reveals the real reason he has been volunteering for evening shifts and presents a strong case for why they should be stopped. Meanwhile, Ruhma tells one lie too many and tips Valerie over the edge. Ayesha is troubled when an old friend suspects her younger brother has been coerced into a relationship - with an older man.
As events spiral out of control, Ruhma struggles to protect Besa while Ayesha is determined to help Sid move out of Emma's house. Zara deals with a difficult patient whose lies put her in the firing line, but is there something more going on?
