Martin Bryce lives in a cul de sac in a quiet suburban area. He is the chairman of every club committee going and believes himself to be the pivotal member of the community. The stability of Martin's life is disturbed when Paul moves in next door. He has the poise, looks and self-confidence to dent Martin's self-imposed rule of 'the Close'. His wife, Ann, has tolerated his compulsive behaviour as she knows he is a good man at heart, but Paul is somebody who will test her loyalty to Martin in more ways than one.
Paul asks Martin to do him a favour by supervising the delivery of some manure he's expecting. Unfortunately, things don't quite go according to plan.
Martin goes to Belgium on business where, against his better judgement, he's persuaded to go out on the town. The repercussions of this cause great consternation among his family and friends back home.
The suburban sitcom continues. New neighbours are due to move in to the close, much to Martin's chagrin.
Martin saves a little girl from drowning and is hailed a hero. At first he isn't quite sure how to cope with his new-found fame, but he soon gets to grips with being the centre of attention.
Martin achieves a long-held ambition and joins an exclusive local club. Meanwhile, Ann discovers the trials and tribulations of student life at the Open University.
The local people are planning a fete to raise funds for the RSPCA. It is proposed that the main event of the afternoon should be a mock battle. Martin fancies himself as a General of the Cavaliers. However, events take an unexpected course.
