In the wake of a series of bombings and cyberattacks in Stockholm, the Swedish Secret Service SÄPO is struggling to find the organization responsible for the attack. These are trying times for anyone employed in the most secretive of government jobs. Nobody knows that as well as Carl Hamilton, who has absolved years of Navy SEAL training. Having just returned to his home country, Hamilton is enlisted to rejoin an elite black-ops division of SÄPO. At the same time, he is being identified as a possible suspect by agent Kristin Ek. Haunted by his past and unbeknownst to his superiors, Hamilton is suspected to be a double agent for the CIA. After Hamilton and Kristin engage in a wild goose chase across the world to get to the bottom of the attacks, they soon discover that there are darker forces behind the bombings than the usual suspects. An organization taking advantage of fake news, xenophobia and terrorism in order to turn a profit. It's the new Cold War: As loyalties are put to the test, Hamilton is forced to choose what future is best for his country in an age where multinational business interests are the new ideologies…
During a top-secret NATO operation in the Mediterranean, a Swedish attack diver is murdered. Hamilton knows the victim from his time as a Navy SEAL and travels to Toulon's military base in the south of France to investigate the incident.
Hamilton and Kristin go undercover to get more information about the background to the murder. A dangerous hunt, which ultimately affects the whole world, leads via the Riviera's casino to exclusive villas and out to the Mediterranean.
Hamilton travels north to uncover a suspected research espionage on the Kiruna Space Project. At the same time, a truck crosses Sweden's border via Finland. Someone seems to be systematically stealing secret weapon material from Sweden
All information about the operation is classified and Hamilton is sent to Brussels as a bodyguard for the Minister of Defense. At the same time, a group of rebels is preparing for a violent action in connection with an EU summit.
Hamilton has to leave Lykke in the middle of an engagement party, but his desire to live a normal life continues to grow. Important information risks falling into the wrong hands when a researcher is kidnapped and blackmailed.
Hamilton comes home to Lykke and makes plans for the future, but first he has to finish an assignment that becomes increasingly frightening. Hamilton travels to Lithuania's border with Belarus to face the terrorists.
