Following her on-air sabotage of a testy television news anchorwoman, writer Maya Gallo suddenly finds herself out on the street. Unable to find a job and facing eviction from her apartment, she takes the advice of her roommate Wally and goes to see her estranged father, women's magazine editor Jack Gallo, for help. However, in order to see him, she must first run a gauntlet created by Jack's staff at Blush, including his assistant Dennis Finch, former model Nina Van Horn and head photographer Elliot Dimauro.
Finch tries to hijack a surveillance videotape of him and Jack's nanny in a compromising position.
Jack tricks Maya into getting a neighbor to move so he can build a steam room at work.
Finch is convinced that Nina has an imaginary alter ego while Maya discovers how Jack deceived her on Halloween many years ago.
Maya gets caught up in a tangle of practical jokes when she sets out to prove Finch wrong and demonstrate that women can be pranksters too.
Finch conspires to set Maya up on a date with another woman.
Elliott plans to teach Courtney a lesson for dumping Finch, but events take a different turn.

Finch has been secretly writing Blush's advice column under the name Miss Pretty. When Maya, impressed by Finch's writing, asks to meet Miss Pretty, Finch pays a sleazy friend to pose as the columnist. Elliott accidentally offends a big advertiser.
Maya's taking a photography class and her teacher instructs her to take a nude self portrait. Elliot thinks the guy just wants to see Maya naked. Meanwhile, Finch and Nina both feel cast aside when Jack takes a liking to Nina's new assistant on the basis of his ability to do magic tricks.
The nominations for the annual Femmy awards are in and Maya, Nina and Elliott are nominated, while Finch isn't even invited to the ceremony. However, the evening doesn't go exactly as planned for all.
The staff prepares for the annual softball game against the magazine Cosmo. Jack hires Steve Garvey, so that he can play on the team. Maya turns out to be a great pitcher but becomes too competitive.
After throwing his back out playing with his daughter, Jack vows to get in shape and hires a personal trainer who used to be a Navy SEAL. Nina can't figure out why she's not attracted to the trainer, despite his good looks and his obvious interest in her. Maya enlists Finch's help to co-write a screenplay about a vampire cop.
Maya reminds Nina of her history of bad choices in men when Nina's former lover, now a fugitive, returns.
Finch is frustrated when an old nemesis shows up to gloat over his success. Not only does he own a successful business, he is also engaged to their high school homecoming queen. Desperate to impress his old nemesis, Finch plans to wed an insecure supermodel.
Finch announces that he and Adrienne are going to get married. Maya is unconvinced of their love and thinks he is manipulating her somehow. Complications arise when Adrienne's ex, the hockey player, shows up looking for blood...Dennis'. If he is to remain out of harm's way wedding plans will have to be accelerated.
