Fire officials said that for the first time since the wildfire emergency began eight days ago in Southern California, there has been no significant growth in the fires. As winds diminished, more progress was reported in containing the two biggest fires. Displaced families began sending their children back to school, with some attending new schools because of fire damage. NBC News' Morgan Chesky reports. After more than 15 months of war, Israel and Hamas have agreed to a deal to end the fighting in Gaza, free almost 100 hostages still held by Hamas and hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israel. President Biden said the agreement will take effect on Sunday and would be carried out in three phases, with Hamas releasing 33 hostages in the first phase. NBC News' Richard Engel reports on the agreement and reaction in Israel and Gaza. A Southwest Airlines pilot was arrested and accused of driving under the influence before he boarded a flight he was supposed to fly. Southwest said he's been removed from duty. And the Transportation Department sued Southwest for operating "chronically delayed flights" on some routes. Southwest said it was disappointed in the suit, saying it completed 99 percent of its flights without cancellations. NBC News' Tom Costello reports. The FDA said it will ban Red Dye No. 3, a substance that colors many products but has been shown in studies to cause cancer in rats. Food manufactures will have two years to remove the substance from their products. NBC News' Anne Thompson reports.

The head of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association says controllers around the country are devastated by the crash. He said air traffic control staffing is a major issue around the country. He said training and background checks are rigorous for all who want to be controllers. NBC News' Lester Holt reports. Divers continued to search for victims of the midair collision between an American Eagle jet and an Army Black Hawk helicopter. Officials said both the plane's and the helicopter's black boxes have now been recovered. Investigators are looking at staffing in the control tower before the crash and reports that the helicopter was flying above the usual altitude, which put it on a collision course with the jet. NBC News' Tom Costello reports. More details emerged about those lost in the collision of an American Eagle jet and and Army Black Hawk helicopter. Two of the three soldiers on the helicopter were identified, as were more the passengers and crew members on the plane. They included a civil rights lawyer who was about to start teaching at Howard University, and friends returning from a hunting trip in Kansas. NBC News' Tom Llamas reports. The Trump administration said tariffs would take effect on Saturday on goods from Canada, Mexico and China. Mexico's president said the tariffs would violate trade agreements with the U.S. President Trump insisted that the tariffs would not lead to more inflation for U.S. consumers. NBC News' Garrett Haake reports. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will be in Panama Saturday on his first trip in his new role. Panamanian officials were defiant about maintaining control of the Panama Canal after President Trump said he wants to regain control of the canal. Markets endured another down day as the trade war escalates. Among those hardest hit today were certain consumer-based businesses that raised concerns over Americans pulling back their spending. NBC News' Brian Cheung reports. During talks in Saudi Arabia, Ukraine agreed to President Trump's plan for a 30-day ceasefire for the war in Ukraine. Trump said that he will now speak to Russia's president Putin. The U.S. will now resume military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine. NBC News' Keir Simmons reports. Canada canceled its planned surcharges on electricity to the U.S. after President Trump threatened to double his planned tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. Capping a wild day on Wall Street, the president also touted Elon Musk and Tesla on the White House lawn and said he would buy a vehicle. NBC News' Peter Alexander reports. NBC News' Jesse Kirsch reports from Punta Cana, where investigators shared new surveillance video of the missing University of Pittsburgh student last seen on the beach with people she met on the trip. The 20-year-old student went missing early Thursday while on vacation with friends. Officials are interviewing a man believed to be last seen with her on the beach. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy announced changes to air space rules around Washington's DCA airport following a preliminary report from the NTSB on the midair collision over the Potomac that killed 67 people. NBC News' Tom Costello reports. The Department of Education says more than 2,100 civil service workers will lose their jobs. The department says all of its divisions are impacted by the reduction. California is once again reeling from the aftermath of a fast-moving storm that forced evacuation, rescues and even a rare tornado. NBC News' Steve Patterson reports on the storm system that is now moving east. Nearly 100 protesters arrested after sit-in at Trump Tower in NYC to demand release of Mahmoud Khalil. Khalil became one of the faces of the protests against Israel at Columbia University last spring and now faces possible deportation. NBC News' Laura Jarrett reports. President Trump called the European Union "hostile and abusive" and threatened to slap a 200 percent tariff on European alcohol if the E.U. does not drop its 50 percent levy on American whiskey. The Oklahoma attorney general charged Robert Morris with five counts of lewd or indecent acts with a child. Morris is the founder of Gateway, one of the largest megachurches in the country. A federal judge called Trump administration arguments a "heck of a stretch" in a court hearing late Monday. The Trump administration says it has complied with a court order during its deportation of nearly 300 undocumented migrants it says are criminal members of violent gangs. NBC News' Kelly O'Donnell reports. President Trump will speak with Russia's President Putin tomorrow as part of his efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Ukraine has already agreed to Trump's 30-day ceasefire plan, but Putin has cast doubts about it. NBC News' Keir Simmons reports from inside Russia. The Department of Justice has been appealing rulings that do not go the Trump administration's way, while officials are making statements that they don't believe some of the court orders are legitimate. NBC News' Laura Jarrett reports. Police say Joshua Riibe, an American tourist from Iowa, was with Sudikhsa Konanki just before she vanished. While police say no suspects have been identified in Konanki's disappearance, Riibe's lawyers say he has been confined to his hotel and escorted by police everywhere he goes. Now, a source in the Dominican Republic's attorney general's office tells NBC News that Riibe's lawyers have filed a petition for habeas corpus, which is generally used to argue for release from detention. NBC News' Jesse Kirsch reports from the Dominican Republic. Forever 21, known for trendy fast fashion pieces, has filed for bankruptcy. The final sales in its stores are offering steep discounts as the company liquidates its assets. President Trump has announced 25% tariffs on imported cars and auto parts. According to a Goldman Sachs estimate, that could add $5,000-$15,000 to the cost of a foreign-made car and $3,000-$8,000 to cars made in the U.S. with parts from overseas. NBC News' Christine Romans spoke to an owner of dealerships in Michigan, who says customers are calling, looking for deals before the tariffs kick in. The Department of Health and Human Services plans to cut 10,000 jobs across several agencies as part of the Trump administration's efforts to restructure the federal government. According to HHS, the ‘dramatic restructuring' will save taxpayers $1.8 billion annually. NBC News' Anne Thompson has the latest on what agencies the cuts will affect. 36-year-old Paul Kim was arrested in connection to an arson attack on Tesla location in Las Vegas. Kim faces a series of charges, including arson, destruction of property and possession of an explosive device, stemming from the March 18 attack. NBC News' Liz Kreutz reports. President Trump is privately angry with national security adviser Mike Waltz for mistakenly including a journalist in an encrypted group chat about a military strike in Yemen, according to two GOP sources with knowledge of the conversations. The FAA announced today all helicopters flying around Reagan National Airport must turn on their geo-positioning transmitters, known as ADSB. The helicopter that collided with a passenger plane near Reagan in January did not have ADSB on, which was approved by the Army. A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar and Thailand, killing at least 150 and injuring hundreds. The full scale of the destruction is unclear in Myanmar, where the military government keeps a tight hold on information. The U.S. Geological Survey estimated thousands could be dead. The Table Rock Complex Fire in South Carolina is the "highest priority fire right now in the country," according to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC). In Texas, pounding rain in the Rio Grande Valley has led to flash floods that have killed at least three people. NBC News' Marissa Parra reports from the hot zone. Vice President Vance traveled to an American military base in Greenland and argued that the Danish territory would be more secure under U.S. control. President Trump said his administration will offer one thousand dollars and travel assistance to undocumented migrants to ‘self deport', which he says will cut costs related to detaining and deporting them. A Temple University student was suspended after a video posted to social media showed a waitress carrying a sign with an anti-Jewish message at a Barstool Sports bar in Philadelphia. No jurors were selected on the first day of music mogul Sean ‘Diddy' Combs's federal criminal trial for sex trafficking and racketeering. The doors of the Sistine Chapel were sealed Wednesday as the papal conclave got underway.
