Bob Newhart returns to the TV as Dick Loudon, as he and his wife Joanna decide to leave life in New York City and buy a little inn in Vermont. Dick is a how-to book writer, who eventually becomes a local TV celebrity as host of "Vermont Today."
After Joanna falls through the ice at the River Day Festival, she blames Dick for all the bad things in her life.
The Minuteman is shut down, so Dick and the gang try to help Kirk bring it up to code.
Dick gets extremely depressed after he finds out that the Stratford Inn cannot be declared a historic landmark.
Kirk is upset when Leslie's high school sweetheart returns from exotic travels and asks for her hand in marriage.
Dick reads the work of an aspiring writer, and praises it to avoid hurting her feelings; the writer's husband decides to quit his job so that she can write full time, and Dick tries to find her an agent before they run out of money.
Kirk tries to keep 24 guests who have been snowed-in on Christmas Eve entertained while Dick tries to find somewhere for Joseph to stay with his pregnant wife.
A US senator's wife holds a press conference at the inn to announce that she is divorcing her husband because he is inattentive.
